What is it Like to Attend Portland State University

What is it Like to Attend Portland State University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Austin is a Portland tutor specializing in English tutoring, French tutoring, public speaking tutoring, and a number of other areas. He is currently a senior at Portland State University majoring in arts and letters, French language and literature, history, and social sciences. See what he had to share about Portland State University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Austin: Portland State University is located in downtown Portland, Oregon. This central location in the city provides for a number of transportation options, including ample bicycle lanes, parking structures, and multiple lines of light rail. For this reason (and because of the diversity of student ages), few students live on campus. This means that the feel of the university is both omnipresent and absent from the citys heart. The boundaries of campus and city are not defined, and many students do not even live in the city of Portland itself. (This is my situation.) Portland is relatively safe (for a U.S. city), but that still leaves plenty of danger. The university has park blocks, or urban walkways with green space, which become unsafe during parts of the night. That being said, the daytime sees such heavy foot traffic that safety is not normally a problem. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Portland State University? Austin: There is little consistency in how available professors are. Academic advisers are available, but exactly how useful they are varies widely. Teaching assistants are not present in many classes, but they are often quite available. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Austin: Like the majority of Portland State University students, I do not live in the dorms. It would be unfair to merely spread hearsay, but given that Portland State University does not have a normal percentage of students living on or near campus, the dorms do not play such a central role as at some other universities and colleges. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported at Portland State University? Austin: Developmental psychology, conflict resolution, business, and engineering get a good showing at Portland State University, among others. That being said, rankings and self-elected specialities are always debatable. I am currently striving for four majors (social sciences, history, arts and letters, and French language and literature). I may or may not also earn a minor or two, depending on the next term. I would argue that the university did an often mediocre job of supporting my areas of study. Without comparing it to other institutions, it is still possible to say that my goals were as much hindered as they were helped. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Austin: I was incredibly engaged in my high school and had many great friends. A year later, I found myself reduced to tears, wailing to my mother about my lack of friends and even basic social engagement at Portland State University. Greek life does not play an important part in this university and its social life (or lack thereof). My way into a now much more satisfying social life was through working with a study-abroad company based at Portland State University that hires a diverse range of American and international students to welcome and support short-term study abroad students from East Asia. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Austin: My future career choices are in academia, and therefore I have not attended these sessions. Instead, I seek out professors and ask how they got where they are. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges at Portland State University? Austin: Portland State University does have spacious study areas, but it is also the largest university in the state of Oregon, and so things can get crowded. Describe the surrounding town at Portland State University. Austin: Portland is a very dynamic city that is becoming increasingly popular. As previously mentioned, there is little to no distinction between Portland State University and Portland itself, in many cases. Portland State University is a few minutes away from major theatres and shopping malls, and it is relatively close to great hiking, two hours from the coast, less than that from Mount Hood, etc. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Austin: Portland State University is the largest university in the state of Oregon, and it has many students in many classes. However, higher-level courses across departments may not be large even with a mix of Master and Bachelor students. Check out Austins tutoring profile. As a personal fitness professional, they can provide advice as well as take your own attitude into account and keep you motivated as you push towards your goals.Stay on track with a personal sports coach ¦ source: Visualhunt - Sole TreadmillThe term ‘coach’ dates back to the 16th century. ‘Coach’ comes from the Old French word, ‘coche’ meaning ‘horse-drawn carriage’.In the mid-19th century, ‘coaching’ began to be used to describe a teacher helping a student prepare for their final exams, however, it was not until 1860 that ‘coaching’ entered common use in a sporting context.Private coaching, also known as personal fitness training is not limited to physical improvement. Unlike general sports coaching (for football, for example), personal training is about the wellbeing of a client just as much as it is about their sporting a bility. For this reason, a personal trainer would be able to help you improve your confidence, gain new life skills and feel more comfortable in your own skin as well as helping you become physically healthier. The International Coach Federation defines personal training as the tailored support of an individual in the implementation and the evolution of their project. In a personal training arrangement, the coach helps the athlete fulfil their maximum potential through personalised training programs and fitness nutrition plans as well as progress tracking.Search for personal trainers near me.In-Home Personal Training: Low Hassle FitnessPersonal training means professional support from a fitness specialist with a personal trainer certificate.Personal trainers use their program design skills and the knowledge they have acquired through their years of experience in the fitness industry to provide their clients with a tailored exercise program specifically designed to help them achieve the ir goals. In addition to offering one to one support and individualised advice, personal trainers can adapt their services to your situation. If you’re a busy mum, or your career doesn’t leave you much free time, coaches can come to your home.Whether it’s to help a client get in shape, lose weight, gain muscle mass, improve their flexibility, increase muscular strength or prepare for a sports tournament, in-home personal trainers are able to provide quality workout plans and personal training sessions which you can do without leaving the house!Advantages to In-Home Personal TrainingSave time: With the removed hassle of making the journey to the gym and finding a parking space, you’ll have more time on your hands to use however you wish.Stay motivated: Managing to put on your sports kit and head to the gym on your own isn’t always easy, but with a coach who comes to your door, there will be no room for excuses, and with someone to guide you, you’re far more likely to succee d in your objectives.Personalisation: Unlike the type of training you find in gyms (which is usually done as part of a group fitness class), private coaching is centred around you, the client. This means that your fitness program and workouts are prescribed based on your physiology, body composition and aerobic ability, following a fitness assessment with your trainer.Professional services: In-home personal trainers are fully qualified in what they do, and have the knowledge to advise on a wide variety of topics, from how much sleep you should be getting, to the time of day you should be working out, to post-workout snacks. Some people prefer the added level of security, whereas others see strangers as a distraction.Working on your strength is just one reason to find a personal trainer ¦ source: Pixabay - RyanMcGuireRegardless of how you feel about this, there are many advantages to personal training at the gym:Qualified coaching: Training in gyms and health clubs means that you are surrounded by fitness experts as well as others who are in your position. Th is can keep you motivated and give you peace of mind that your coach is fully qualified and approved by the organisation.Realise your dreams: Your personal trainer will provide you with a training program that is made with you in mind, and with full access to the gym facilities, your coach will be able to take you through your workouts, so you never hit a dead end in your sessions.A source of motivation: Having your personal training session at the gym means that you will be surrounded by others who are working just as hard as you are, but the difference is that you’ll have professional guidance on taking your training to the next level, removing the risk of stagnation.A relationship of trust: Just as with in-home coaching, arranging to your personal trainer at the gym adds a layer of confidence, since both parties have to commit to the agreement. The relationship of trust that develops from this is key to obtaining positive results.Group Fitness Classes: A Cost-Efficient OptionAs the old saying goes, ‘the more, the merrier’!Setting out to get fit as a new year’s resolution, training in preparation for a competition, or just trying to burn some calories demands a lot of motivation.Trying to do these things alone isn’t always easy, and a lack of motivation is the reason why so many people fall back into their old habits. So, can group training help you see your fitness program through?Exercising as part of a group means that you can feed off the energy of other people in the training session.Interacting with fitness experts as well as others in your position will give you a chance to listen to other people’s experiences, motivate each other and share tips on every aspect of health and fitness. So, how does group coaching work? You’ll get together a group of friends or colleagues and register for group training with your chosen gym.Just as with one on one training, you’ll have a pre-programme meeting to discuss your lifestyles and fitness goals so t hat the coach can set out an appropriate training program for the group.Wherever you choose to have your training sessions, you’ll have the company of 2 to 3 others as well as your fitness coach â€" so there’s no need to worry about losing motivation! The Increasing Popularity of Personal TrainingPersonal training services are in higher demand than ever before â€" and the increasing popularity shows no signs of slowing.Word of mouth works well, and it means that happy customers become ambassadors for whichever personal training business they use, recruiting more people and introducing them to personal training. Is the internet the answer to everything including sport? ¦ source: Pixabay - FirmBeeClients are always gaining more knowledge about the types of health problems they may encounter in their lifetimes, and exercise is usually a recommended prevention method, so finding a personal trainer gives them a proper focus for this. With more demand comes more diversity in what person al trainers have to offer. This is why more and more coaches are offering their services as an online personal trainer. The internet offers even more flexibility and choice in working with your personal coach.Of course, the cost of a personal coach who works around you is often higher than those who work solely at the gym, simply because of travel time and journey costs.

Job Search Made Easy (Even for Introverts) - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Job Search Made Easy (Even for Introverts) - Introvert Whisperer Job Search Made Easy (Even for Introverts) While launching a job search may not rank in difficulty with rocket science, it has become increasingly difficult and more complex. If you add on top of that some Introvert tendencies, like a reluctance to “put yourself out there,” you are starting to nudge the scales towards seriously tough. If you are on the brink of launching a job search or have started one, hit the pause button before doing anything else. There are some simple guidelines you can follow to ensure you get the results you want, without the standard Introvert cringe: 1. Don’t Cherry-Pick Job Search Advice There are volumes on job search advice. If you pay attention, you’ll notice there are themes or things that get repeated. This should be a huge indicator that you need to do this “thing.” Too often I see job seekers decide to skip what they are being told to do. This will have dire consequences. 2. Don’t Do Everything at Once You will get overwhelmed, especially if you are an Introvert. You have to figure out your keywords, branding, LinkedIn profile, Facebook, Twitter, resume, online job sites, the latest and greatest job search tool, finding recruiters, interview prep, salary study, body language, handshake, new wardrobe, company research, networking and attending business events. Long list? That’s just to name a few. The deal is, if you attempt to bite off too much at once, you’ll choke or die trying. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) Start by being abundantly clear on one or two  â€œjob types” you are pursuing. You’d be shocked at how very few job seekers have real clarity. Then, work on a targeted resume. 3. It’s All About Connecting I deliberately put this in the middle, as Introverts really like to avoid this one (it’s the cherry-picking I told you about in #1). Most likely, you won’t find a job via a posted job. I’m sure someone has landed a job this way, but no one I know has been hired solely by pursuing a posted job. That means you and your resume have to connect to a real, live person. You can do this primarily through referrals and introductions from the people you know. People hire people. The online job search comforts Introverts because they don’t have to connect to a person. It’s a false sense of comfort. Start out to build your confidence. Set up coffee with one person you know so you can let them know what you’re looking for and see if they can introduce you to someone in your targeted company. Rinse and repeat. You will build confidence by doing this one at a time. 4. Figure Out YOUR Competitive Advantage You must think you have something to offer or you wouldn’t be pursuing a job. Why you? What is the thing that will set you apart from everyone else? You have to get it first or no one else will. If you can figure out your competitive advantage, you can translate that into everything from your resume to your LinkedIn profile. We are all unique, even if we do the same job as a thousand other people. 5. Don’t Take Things Personally You will discover a complete lack of etiquette out there. People don’t return emails or phone calls, they fail to follow up after interviews and they expect you to drop things just because they are hiring. You must pick up the slack and make the phone calls until you get a real human and do superhuman rescheduling. It’s not because they don’t like you; it’s because hiring someone takes a huge bite out of their schedule, and business must go on. Oh well. As a fellow Introvert, your key to a flawless job search is to connect with people, which isn’t always easy. But if you take it slow and easy, trust most of what you read on the job search and know you are an asset, you’ll love the results. This post originally appeared on JobMob. How to Develop Strong Leadership Skills Your Complete Guide to Developing Strong Leadership Skills ChaptersWhat Are Leadership Skills? Why is it so Important for You to Develop Leadership SkillsHow Can You Develop Your Leadership Skills?Online Resources to Help You Develop Your Leadership SkillsNelson Mandela. Winston Churchill. It doesn’t take much thought to come up with the names of great leaders; what’s puzzling is how they came by their leadership skills. To be sure, many great leaders benefit from formal education, but then, so do a great many people... and they are not necessarily remembered for their leadership skill. What are leadership skills, anyway? How come some people seem imbued with leadership qualities while others in leadership positions... don’t?Think of a manager you work(ed) for whose autocratic style of management gave neither you nor your teammates room or opportunity to thrive and, mayhap grow into a leadership position yourselves. In fact, they may have quenched any desire you might have had to seek out leadership development! Why does anyone aspire to become a leader?Often, it is because a leadership role is the next logical step in their career â€" whether they possess any leadership skill or not.Sometimes, people crave power (and riches, the two often go hand in hand). They believe that an extensive cadre of subordinates is the way to wield power... but, as we all know, such power must be used judiciously.A handful of people who seek out leadership development see it as a vital aspect in their personal development; such ones do not have any aspirations to take a leadership position in their company. Good leaders possess a combination of training and traits that make them stand out Image by Gerd Altmann from PixabayYou would think that the skills that make for effective leadership would be easy to determine and list but, the truth is, the topic is debatable.Leadership is not only something you learn through a series of classes such as business administration or principles of management.True leadership is a mixture of human qualities like trustworthiness and empathy that blend seamlessly with learned abilities such as decisiveness and communication skills.Strategic thinking is often regarded as a leadership skill. It involves visualising all possible outcomes of a situation or decision; it is a type of thinking that requires imagination â€" something you either have or don’t have. That example concisely sums up the blending of human traits and learned skill that epitomises leadership.Creativity is another important leadership trait; it permits everything from effective communicat ion to boosting morale among employees. It is another personality trait that cannot be taught. However, there are things that you can do to boost the human traits you have in common with great leaders; why not find out how?Why is it so Important for You to Develop Leadership SkillsIt is possible that labelling these skills ‘management and leadership’ may perhaps do them a disservice. After all, not everyone aspires to be a leader; there is a chance you might turn away from the benefits of good leadership practices simply because you don’t think of yourself as CEO material. Not so fast! In seeking out leadership development, you’re not signing up for a managerial position, you’re looking for great interpersonal skills so you can get along better with others.Team performance might not concern you but, if you’re hoping to learn conflict management... maybe so you can help kids manage bullies at school, then leadership training is exactly what you need.Consider these instances where good leadership is essential:You are a teacher who likes to conducts team building activities in your classroomYou are a guidance counsellor who practises active listening and gives empathetic supportYou are preparing to enter university and have been tasked with writing a self-assessmentYou are seeking to boost your self-confidence through leadership competenciesYou want to understand how assertiveness can help you advance in lifeAfter several rough months, you want to understand emotional intelligence and how it can help you manage difficult situations or avoid them altogether. Not once of these examples, save perhaps for being a teacher puts you in a leadership role but still call for leadership skills. It often goes unremarked that teachers actually fill leadership roles Image by David Mark from PixabayNaturally, if you are interested in being a team leader at work, it wouldn’t hurt to include any leadership and management training you’ve had on your CV... but you don’t have to set your sights on the high bar to learn leadership skills and discover your leadership style. Now discover other ways that leadership training can benefit you in every aspect of your life. How Can You Develop Your Leadership Skills? You don’t have to do as Madeleine Slade (AKA Mirabehn) did, abandoning home and family, to learn from a great leader. You don’t need to spend tons of money, go away on retreats or completely change your personality, either. To start developing leadership skills, you only need a bit of direction; you can take things from there.According to a survey conducted by a team of leadership consultants, the skills most needed by leaders today are actually behaviours, not anything th at can be taught. For instance, the majority of leaders who were surveyed aver that anyone who leads must be motivating and inspiring. That makes a lot of sense; delegating tasks and responsibility is far easier if your team is motivated to complete them.Other effective leadership skills include problem-solving, relationship-building and, believe it or not, being ethical and honest and trustworthy (no, they are not all the same thing!).What is most striking is that all of these are soft skills; human traits that you may already possess; traits that only need cultivating.Go ahead: be as honest and ethical as you can be! You may well inspire others to do the same. Be a great communicator! You never know who will be inspired by your personal leadership to do the same. That is only one half of the equation; the other half does actually call for a bit of education. For instance, it would help for you to know and understand the different leadership theories and when best to apply them.Let’ s say your boss knows you and your team can do your jobs competently, with a minimum of oversight. S/he might employ the laissez-faire style of leadership, which falls under the situational theories. If you’re really lucky and have a fantastic manager, s/he might practise transformational leadership, a style of leading that inspires positive changes in all who follow them. This type of leadership falls under the relationships theories of leadership. We’ve written an entire article on how you can develop these leadership skills; now we’re going to find resources available to get you started. You can take leadership skills training courses online, often for free! Image by Gerd Altmann from PixabayOnline Resources to Help You Develop Your Leadership SkillsBelieve it or not, cultivating different styles of leadership is a hot topic these days; even academia is on board with students in the earliest Key Stages learning creative thinking skills and problem-solving.You might think that an education in leadership skills and development would come with a hefty price tag; in one sense, you are quite right. It is by no means cheap to earn a degree in Business, let alone an MBA â€" where there are entire courses on Business Ethics and Organisational Behaviour. The Masters of Business Administration is the degree that many aspiring to a leadership position aim for. Would you be totally surprised that it’s not actually necessary to have one in order to lead a major company? In fact, you can learn all about leadership traits and management skills right in the comfort of your home, ofte n for free. As an example, whether you work in sales, business administration or finance, there is a podcast for you.You could download a Dose of Leadership (Richard Rierson) before you head out for your morning (jog?) commute and absorb all of the wisdom from military leaders, those from the financial sector... even religious leaders. If you’re less interested in how to lead than in a transformative experience, let Dov Baron’s Leadership and Loyalty catch your ear. You will hear about the value of leading a purposeful life and find inspiration to push on, no matter what obstacles you might encounter. From the Women’s Leadership Podcast (Sabrina Braham) to The ONE Thing (Geoff Woods), the wealth of listening material to inspire great leadership is... only one way to gain insights into leadership. You could also take free courses online, participate in workshops, read blogs, find quizzes and puzzles to test and sharpen your thinking skills...There is so much online learning materi al available to anyone who wants to improve their leadership capabilities!Aren’t you glad your Superprof listed the best of them in one, convenient article?

Grammar Exercise Mixed Conditionals

Grammar Exercise Mixed Conditionals I had a Spanish class this morning and my teacher worked with me on the subjunctive tense. Soas payback Ive created a lesson on mixed conditionals.Just kidding, about the payback part. Although I did realize how confusing it gets when you are trying to speak in a mixture of times, which is what we do during normal conversations. Unfortunately or fortunately we dont usually speak in a formulaic manner, so during conversation we talk about the future and the past and the present all at the same time. Here is a somewhat formulaic look at mixing our times in conditionals:Watch the video and try the exercise below: 1. If you __________ (insulted) him yesterday, he _______ __ ____ to the wedding tomorrow. 2. If she __________ (accepts) the promotion, she ____ __ ____ to Brazil in 2015. (future using will) 3. I ________ ______ (speak) fluent Spanish, if I ____ lived in Spain for 10 years. 4. He _____ _____ ____ (left), if he ____ _____ (known) you were coming. Joan Oh, man now that I got the I, II and III conditionals, the mixed conditionals appear so those conditionals have nothing to do with the other ones?Lets see 1. If you hadnt insulted him yesterday, he would go to the wedding tomorrow. 2. If she had accepted the promotion, she will go to Brazil in 2015. (future using will) 3. I would speak fluent Spanish, if I had lived in Spain for 10 years. 4. He wouldnt have left, if he had known you were coming. But the 4th one is not the III type conditional? Now Im lost. Jesús Castañé Hi. I disagree with Joan in the first and second. Here my try.1.- If you hadn`t insulted him yesterday, he would be going to the wedding tomorrow. 2.- She accepted the promotion, she will go to Brazil in 2015 3.- I would speak fluent Spanish, if I had lived in Spain for 10 years. 4.- He wouldnt have left if he had known you were coming. Thanks in advance. Joan I really have problems with mixed conditionals. I thought there were only 3 types, and now I discover there are more of them. Why dont they teach them as type iV, V VI and so on? I dont get it. MarvinOB 1. If you hadn ´t insulted him yesterday, he would be going to the wedding tomorrow. 2. If she had accepted the promotion, she would be going to Brazil in 2015. (future using will) 3. Clemens I used to drink coffee in the mornings when I was in school.I usually drink coffee every morning. He usually be a journalist. Now he usually writes fic tion.I am usually staying up late at night. LOIEnglish Clemens. You made two mistakes. Number 3 and Number 5. Number 3 is: He used to be a journalist. This is about the past. When we talk about our profession in the present tense we dont say usually. For example: I am a teacher. He is a journalist. Usually indicates something that is frequent but not constant. Our profession is constant while we are working in the profession. So, even when Im sleeping at night, Im still a teacher.Number 5 is a bit of a trick question. In this case the correct answer is: I am used to staying up late at night. The meaning isnt about the past it is about the present but it signifies that it is something we are accustomed to. Notice the construction: to be + used to + verb ING. We wouldnt use usually in the present continuous form (to be + verbING) because we use the present continuous form to talk about something that is happening at the moment. For example: I am staying up late tonight! I usually stay up late on Saturdays. I used to stay up late every night. I am used to staying up late.I hope this helps! Adham Bel Karim i usually drink coffee every morning. LOIEnglish Very good Adham! You should try the other questions too! Lewis Great Video!!!!! Thanks Pauline Guédon Hello, Isnt there a mistake in the sentences Did you used to ? and I didnt used to. Shouldnt we use Did you use to and I didnt use to instead ? Thanks for your answer LOIEnglish Pauline,I had to do a bit of research to get a clear answer about this. It is fairly divided about the ed when used with did or didnt. My most trusted grammatical sources however, say that you are correct and there is a mistake in the video. We shouldnt add the ed when using did or didnt in a sentence. In spoken English there is no clear pronunciation difference thus making it a written mistake that is so common to native English speakers it is becoming more and more accepted. Just googling it I found several news headlines that use the ed ending with didnt. Ive read that used to is becoming a modal verb over time and that soon either spelling will be correct. Although, at this time I would write it without the ed with did or didnt. Thanks for the great question! It was a tough one. Im going to record the video over correcting the mistake! Joan Great tip. Lets see if I got it:1. I don’t usually go to work on the weekend.2. Do you usually work on Monday?3. I used to walk to work when I lived downtown.4. I didn’t use to like broccoli. Deren Saraçoglu Hello. First of all, thank you for the information you shared. But I`d like to emphasize one thing on the video and the exercises below the video that the negative form of used to is: I didnt use to or He/She/It didnt use to. But instead, I saw that you had written them with the -ed in the end. I think you might like to make the corrections. Thank you again, have a great day.
